Republicans were encouraged last year when President Bush won 43 percent of the Hispanic vote in New Jersey, up from 35 percent in 2000. By contrast, Democrat John Kerry outpolled Bush among black voters in the state by more than 5-to-1. Four years ago, Bret Schundler, the Republican candidate for governor, received 26 percent of the Hispanic vote.
