Taking His Seat Back
KSAT.com has a small piece on the Ciro Rodriguez campaign.
More about Cuellar’s lack of support from his colleagues can be seen in The Hill:
Cuellar has had a rocky relationship with some of his colleagues, many of whom have complained about his tendency to side publicly with the administration on such issues as the Real ID Act and the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). Some members have openly speculated that Cuellar might switch parties.
The biggest problem for Cuellar is not that he hasn’t made many friends in the Democratic Caucus. Cuellar’s problem this time around is in Laredo, and his name is Richard Raymond. In 2004, Cuellar cleaned up in Laredo while Rodriguez did the same in San Antonio. Unfortunately for Rodriguez, turnout in Laredo exceeded San Antonio’s. (Off the Kuff has his own take on the race, as does BOR.) With State Representative Raymond in the race - another strong candidate from Laredo - Cuellar will be lucky to make the runoff.
I haven’t done a poll in the district, but based on the geographic breakdowns, it seems to me Ciro Rodriguez will win the primary. Cuellar and Raymond will have to beat each other up just to get to round two. Whichever one succeeds will be all the worse for wear, while Rodriguez will be rested and ready. Ciro Rodriguez will get his seat back.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Nor a better Democrat.
P.S. For those of you in San Antonio, Ciro will be announcing his candidacy on Saturday, October 15 at 11 am. Bring your walking shoes to 6108 S. Flores.

[…] In a previous post, I talked about the San Antonio-Laredo split that defines the 28th congressional district in Texas. Just because Rodriguez is strong in San Antonio doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have support in Laredo, as the following release demonstrates: […]

[…] As previously noted, I expect Richard Raymond and Henry Cuellar to steadily build to a mudslinging crescendo as they fight to hold on to their shared base in Laredo. To the winner goes the chance to enter the runoff with Ciro Rodriguez, who will have remained relatively splatter-free in his own base of San Antonio while building grassroots support district-wide. […] The blog world in Texas (Dos Centavos and The Jeffersonian) is beginning to notice Ciro’s work-in-progress website. So I thought I would re-share my dos centavos on why Ciro will win. […]
