Marco Antonio Firebaugh High School
Every candidate talks about their commitment to education, but how many live ones can point to a school bearing their name as proof? Former Assemblyman Marco Antonio Firebaugh, running to replace term-limited Martha Escutia in California’s 30th State Senate district, can do just that. As was reported by Marcy Santana of the Los Angeles Wave, the City of Lynwood named their newest school the Marco Antonio Firebaugh High School.
State Superintendent of Instruction Jack O’Connell was one of the educational leaders on hand to speak of Firebaugh’s contribution:
“All of these new schools, they’re thanks to the citizens of this great state,” he said. “But having an advocate like Firebaugh by your side helps. … Ever since I’ve known him, he’s worked hard to improve educational opportunities for all of our students, not just in his districts, but for students everywhere.”
It is Firebaugh’s actual record of achievement on issues like education that will carry him to victory in June’s primary election. Despite running against two sitting assemblymen, Rudy Bermudez and Ron Calderon, my recent poll shows that the race is a virtual tie when voters are read a positive profile of each candidate. Once the negatives are read on all three candidates, Firebaugh bolts to a 19 point lead.

The poll demonstrates how badly the voters in this district want their next state senator to be someone they can believe in. In this predominantly Latino area, Firebaugh gives them exactly that. He came to California a Spanish speaker and didn’t really learn English until the third grade. Yet that didn’t stop him from graduating from UCLA Law School and going on to a distinguished career in the Assembly. His life story and his record of achievement on the issues that matter most in southeast LA have given Firebaugh the foundation for a positive, grassroots campaign.
The kids of Marco Antonio Firebaugh High School will be proud.
