Latinos and the Special

Shane Goldmacher of the Capitol Weekly writes about Governor Schwarzenegger’s attempt to build on his initiatives’ Latino support despite his own poor standing with that key demographic.

Capitol Weekly obtained the results of an internal poll commissioned by Univision, the leading Spanish-language TV network, showing that although the governor may be unpopular among Hispanics, two of his initiatives, Propositions 74 and 75, are ahead by double-digit margins among Latinos. Propositions 76 and 77 both trail by single-digits, with many Latinos still undecided on each of the measures.

Those results stand in stark contrast to Schwarzenegger’s own approval rating among Latinos, which had plummeted to 18 percent, according to the latest poll by the Public Policy Institute of California.

Goldmacher goes on to report that Univision is now using the poll results to sell both Schwarzenegger and the labor unions on using Univision for Spanish-language advertising.

Of course, the question I would want answered is what percentage of the Latino voters polled watch Univision. As I’ve mentioned before, only 12 percent of Latino voters nationwide watch more Spanish language television than English. The Univision poll, if done properly, may ironically be evidence of why Schwarzenegger and the labor unions should do more commercials targeted to English-speaking Latinos on network television (and, perhaps, SiTV) than Spanish-language commercials on Univision.
