Congress Getting Gray Davis Poll Numbers
In baseball, there’s the “Mendoza line,” the threshold between a bad batting average and a really bad batting average. In politics, it seems like there a “Gray Davis line,” the threshold between bad poll numbers and really bad poll numbers. The kind of poll numbers that get voters - California voters, anyway - thinking recall. I think the Gray Davis line is 30 percent job approval.
Mark Preston of the CNN Political Unit reports on the new CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll:
For the first time in over a decade, Congress’ approval rating has dipped below 30 percent (29 percent), according to the poll of 1,012 adults, which was conducted Oct. 13 through Oct. 16. President Bush did not fare much better, with a paltry 39 percent of Americans approving of the way he is handling his job as commander-in-chief.
Mystery Pollster describes the four times a U.S. President has dipped below the Gray Davis line and who would have to abandon George W. Bush for his approval rating to go that low.
