What Would a Real Democrat Do?
Deb Price writes in the Detroit News that “Anti-gay politics will backfire with Hispanics.” Tell that to Texas State Representative Richard Raymond, who helped put Prop 2, the recently passed anti-gay constitutional amendment, on the ballot.
Even the Dallas Morning News, a very conservative newspaper (Bill O’Reilly’s rants notwithstanding), opposed the amendment, writing “Why on earth deny to these men and women, not special privileges, but ordinary human decencies?”
Meanwhile, I learned on Off the Kuff that Raymond’s excuse was that he “voted his district.” Great! The Dallas Morning News is talking human decencies, Raymond sounds like he’s taking a poll. Where’s the leadership?
Henry Cuellar chases power and votes for the Bush/DeLay legislative agenda. Richard Raymond follows the pack and votes for Prop 2. Meanwhile, Ciro Rodriguez spent 7 years in DC voting his principles. Democratic principles.
There’s one real Democrat in this Democratic primary: Ciro Rodriguez.
[Update:] Thanks to The Jeffersonian for his analysis of the race.
Three things are going to define this race. Raymond’s introduction to the voters and how fast and how high his numbers rise. Raymond’s and Rodriguez’ attempts to showcase Cuellar’s record and how fast and how low his numbers drop, and Ciro’s bank account.
I agree. Though I would also add that Ciro doesn’t need to raise as much as Cuellar and Raymond do. The slugfest between those two in Laredo is likely to cost well over a million dollars, what with all the back and forth. Ciro just needs enough to remind the district of his good deeds while in Congress and the state legislature. But even that costs a pretty penny in this day and age.
As much as I liked The Jeffersonian’s analysis, I liked even more that he gave me cool points! I’m going to have to think of ways to earn more…
