How Lobbying Plays in Arizona

The Hotline reports on Jim Pederson’s offensive against Jon Kyl:

Ex-AZ Dem chair/developer Jim Pederson (D) called for increased regulations on business lobbyists in the wake of the Jack Abramoff scandal. Pederson says he wants a new law requiring federal lawmakers and corporate lobbyists to report their meetings to the FEC, and that those meetings should be disclosed immediately to show voters which business and special interests are influencing policy and officials. Sen. Min. Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Sen. Ken Salazar (D-CO) joined Pederson at the event (Sunnucks, Phoenix Business Journal, 1/11).

Pederson: “The main issue we have against Sen. (Jon) Kyl (R-AZ) is that he consistently voted against any kind of reform that is related to lobbying.” Kyl fired back by calling Pederson “disingenuous” and citing occasions in which he had focused efforts on congressional ethics. Kyl: “The guy (Pederson) starts his campaign off with a lie, which I resent” (Flannery, Arizona Republic, 1/11).
