ALAS CEO Araceli Ruano Gets to Work
Agustin Gurza of the Los Angeles Times reports on my wife’s first project since taking over the reins at the ALAS Foundation:
The world’s top Latin music stars are raising funds for the victims of the massive earthquake that hit Peru last month.
Shakira, Daddy Yankee and others are asking people throughout Latin America, Spain and the U.S. to donate directly to the Red Cross through phone links, bypassing intermediaries and reducing administrative costs and the chance for fraud, according to the Panama-based ALAS Foundation, a non-profit that organized the campaign called ALAS Por Peru (Wings for Peru).

The ALAS Foundation, which primarily works to improve the welfare of children in Latin America, has a stellar roster of supporters led by Honorary President Gabriel García Márquez, Colombia’s famed novelist and Nobel laureate. Spanish pop singer Bosé is president of the Board of Activists, and benefactors include Mexican media mogul Emilio Azcárraga and telecommunications billionaire Carlos Slim, one of the world’s richest men.
